History
Troop 29 has been in existence for over 40 years, dating back to 1982. At that time there were around 6 Boy Scouts in the troop. In 1992, after some disrepair, Scoutmaster Zimmerman reinstituted the Troop, which had about 8 Scouts. In 1997, Scoutmaster David Clark, known as “Mr. Clark” took over. Between then and now, over 130 Scouts have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Troop 29 has one of the highest rates in the United States for Scouts that become Eagles. Currently, under Mr. Clark, the troop has about 45 registered Scouts.
Trips
When the Troop was first started, the Scouts met with the sister troop of Troop 29, located in England.
Since then there have been many fun campouts. Ockanickon, held nearby at Ockanickon Scout Reservation is a one-week trip that happens every year in the summer. Usually, around 40 scouts from Troop 29 attend, for a week that involves great fun, merit badge opportunities, being able to meet other troops, and tons of volleyball and aquatics.
Philmont is another Scout Reservation, located in New Mexico the troop has camped at Philmont twice, an 11-day trip filled with hiking and fun Scout activities.
In the wintertime, the Troop has an annual ski trip campout, where scouts can learn or enjoy skiing/snowboarding. Around this time the Troop also has a cabin trip up north in the Poconos.
In 2018, the Troop traveled to Virginia to visit Shenandoah National Park. Here there were many memorable hikes, such as Old Rag Mountain. Since then, every summer the Troop has traveled to Maine to camp at Acadia National Park. Some enjoyable activities were hiking Cadillac Mountain, eating lobster in Bar Harbor, taking a boat tour to check out surrounding islands, and many more fun hikes. In 2017 and 2022, the Troop held a backpacking trip in the White Mountains in New Hampshire, an unforgettable experience for all who went.
West Point
Every year, the West Point Military Academy holds an event where hundreds of Boy Scout troops around the nation go and compete in a series of scout-related activities. This includes how camp is set up, a makeshift gate, drill, knots, ranger, fire-building, wilderness survival, first aid, and many other activities. Each activity is graded, with the troop tallying the most points at the end being the winner. Troop 29 started going to West Point in 1997 and won for the first time in 2001. Since then, Troop 29 is a nation-best 12-time champion, an unsurpassable feat.
Why join us?
Troop 29 is a fun, welcoming environment. The Troop does its best to make everyone feel welcome. Most Scouts come in not knowing anyone in the Troop and leave with lifelong friends. On a weekly basis, the Troop holds many activities, such as a weekly game of dodgeball. Other activities that are common are cookoffs, egg drops, first-aid training and relays, merit badges, fire building (sometimes flag-retirement ceremonies), light PT, West Point prep, etc. The troop’s mission is for everyone to have as much fun as possible, while simultaneously advancing in rank, putting themselves in a position to earn the rank of Eagle Scout before the age of 18.
